Sometimes it Gets Bumpy

February 18, 2022

As the market heads into the 3-day weekend, uncertainty remains around the situation with Russia and Ukraine.  The stock market has never liked uncertainty.  However, keeping a long-term perspective is always prudent.  Below is the annualized performance of the stock market (SPY as the S&P 500 through 2/17/22).  As a reminder, there have been 15 pullbacks and corrections over the last 10 years, including the current one.  Even with all these corrections, the stock market has annualized over 14% the past 10 years.  Many of these corrections have started during geopolitical situations like what we are now seeing with Russia and Ukraine.  To get market returns, you need to be in the market, even when the ride gets a little bumpy.
